Driver flees fatal hit-and-run collision Saturday night in Marshalltown

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa - A search is underway for the driver in a fatal hit-and-run collision Saturday night.

The Iowa State Patrol says it happened a little after 10 pm at the intersection of S 3rd Avenue and Main Street in Marshalltown. Investigators say Melanie Katherine Nelson, 30 of Marshalltown, was crossing S 3rd Avenue just south of the intersection and was struck by an unknown Dodge Ram pickup.

Nelson was taken to Unity Point Hospital by the Marshalltown Fire Department, but died.

The State Patrol says the vehicle left the scene of the collision and the driver is still at large.

The Marshalltown Police Department also assisted with this incident.
