SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. ( WHNS /Gray News) - A former sheriff is apologizing for his actions after pleading guilty to federal charges of wire fraud, obtaining controlled substances by misrepresentation and conspiracy to commit theft concerning programs receiving federal funds.

Former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright could serve up to 20 years in prison, in addition to paying hefty fines for his crimes.

According to the charging documents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Wright “abused his position as elected Sheriff... to siphon money from Spartanburg County.”

Wright used his county-issued credit card at more than 100 restaurants and stores for personal purchases, according to court documents.

According to the documents, Wright bought 92 packs of cigarettes at Dollar General
