NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) - An air traffic control staffing shortage is causing delays at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday, according to the FAA.

The delays started before 11 a.m. and are expected to last through 3 a.m., according to the FAA.

“Anyone flying today should check flight status before heading to the airport and expect longer waits,” said a spokesperson for NYC Emergency Management.

Flights to Newark are likely to be held at their origin airports. The backup of arriving flights may cause delays out of Newark Airport, officials said. A full ground stop is possible throughout the day.

New York City officials warned that the delays may not be contained to Newark.
