SCOTTSDALE -- Though nine consecutive trips to the state championship match could start to make the experience feel familiar, the Northland Prep girls soccer still managed to end up in an unfamiliar situation.

Forced into a round of deciding penalty kicks for the first time in its nearly decade-long run of dominance, the No. 3-seeded Spartans fell short of a second four-peat on Saturday as the top-seeded St. Johns Redskins secured the AIA Fall Girls Soccer State Championship with a 4-3 victory following a 2-2 tie through regulation and extra time at Coronado High School in Scottsdale.
