FALCON HEIGHTS — Audrey Brownell was a spot away from repeating as the Class 1A State Champion.

The Staples-Motley senior ran a second-place 18:14.6 Saturday, Nov. 1, at Les Bolstad Golf Course, to finish behind St. John’s Prep’s Margaret Duffy, who won with a 17:55.5.

“She did awesome,” SM head coach Bruce Fuhrman said. “With 300 meters to go, you could just see her legs all of a sudden didn’t have the power. She gave up the lead on the downhill part and that was sad. That’s what happens.”

Furhman said Brownell executed her strategy well. Her a Duffy traded off the lead throughout the race, until the end.
