Cape May County officials have approved a nearly $4.9 million contract to replace the protective fender system at the Townsend Inlet Bridge between Sea Isle and Avalon.
The improvements aim to safeguard the bridge from marine vessel collisions.
The $4,884,493 contract with South State, Inc. was authorized during the county Board of Commissioner’s meeting last week.
Work is expected to be completed by May 2026.
The fender system plays a crucial role in protecting the bridge structure while guiding vessels safely through the channel opening beneath the span, according to a statement from the commissioners.
The Cape May County Bridge Commission will contribute $1 million and the county is covering the remainder of the cost.
