GREENSBORO, N.C. — The government shutdown is now nearly tied for the longest in U.S. history, and food assistance programs like SNAP remain on hold, leaving thousands of North Carolinians unsure when help will arrive.

Two federal judges ruled Friday that the White House must use contingency funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to cover November’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program payments. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the president wants to get those payments out quickly and does not plan to appeal the ruling. However, the administration is awaiting further guidance from the courts.
