Veterans deserve health for years beyond service
As we approach Veterans Day, we pause to honor the courage, sacrifice and service of the men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform. But honoring veterans must go beyond ceremonies and parades; it must include meaningful action to support their long-term health and well-being.
One critical yet often-overlooked issue is tobacco use. Studies show that veterans use tobacco at significantly higher rates than the general population to cope with stress, trauma or the challenges of reintegration. Unfortunately, this reliance comes at a steep cost: Tobacco-related illnesses remain a leading cause of preventable death among veterans.
Reducing tobacco use among veterans is about more than health. It’s a matter of respect and responsibility. V
