The lights went out in the House of Representatives on Monday, prompting jokes at the Albanese government’s management of the energy transition.

Liberal MP Leon Rebello was delivering a speech criticising the government’s record when the lights in the chamber abruptly shut off.

“The Albanese Labor government has failed on a number of fronts, but particularly on the economy, cost of living, health and defence,” he said.

Suddenly, the lights flickered, dimmed and shut off, plunging the chamber into darkness.

“Looks like the power prices have gone up too much for this place as well,” Mr Rebello said.
