The cost to maintain Orange's sewer system has been revealed as workers identify the main culprit behind "daily" issues.

In the 2024-25 financial year, Orange City Council spent $346,403 maintaining its sewer network.

During this time, workers responded to 260 "sewer choke" blockages, 217 overflow complaints and five complaints regarding foul odour.

Council's works engineer for the water and sewer system, Josh Barnes, said this was on top of the proactive maintenance they do which included flushing out a pipe in a problem area of Paling Street on October 29.

"We've had some issues in the past so what we're doing is giving it a flush, a clean with high pressure water," he said of the job which took less than ten minutes to complete.
