MANCHESTER, N.H. —
The United States has entered its 34th day of the government shutdown, with impacts being felt nationwide. The longest government shutdown in U.S. history lasted 35 days, from 2018 to 2019.
At the center of the dispute are health care subsidies that make insurance more affordable for millions of Americans. Those tax breaks are set to expire, and Democrats want to extend them.
Renewing the subsidies would cost $35 billion every year for the next decade, a price Republicans say they won't negotiate until enough Democrats approve a spending bill to reopen the government.
In New Hampshire, lawmakers are stepping in as millions of Americans face uncertainty over federal food assistance.
