India has achieved a significant milestone in its space capabilities with the successful launch of the GSAT-7R satellite, also known as CMS-03, on November 2. Weighing 4,410 kg, this satellite is now the heaviest communication satellite launched from Indian soil. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) utilized its powerful LVM3-M5 rocket, often referred to as ‘Bahubali’, to place the satellite into its intended Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
The GSAT-7R satellite is designed to enhance communication services across India and the surrounding oceanic regions. It is expected to operate for a minimum of 15 years, significantly improving the Indian Navy's space-based communication and maritime domain awareness capabilities. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan praised the teams involved for their dedication, especially given the challenging weather conditions during the launch. He described the satellite as a “shiny example of Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” highlighting the indigenous technologies incorporated into its design.
The satellite's heavy mass is attributed to its need for wide coverage, high power, and long service life. It supports multiple frequency bands, including C, Ku, and Ka bands, which require large antennas and high-power amplifiers. Additionally, the satellite is equipped with robust thermal control systems and redundancy features to ensure reliability over its operational life.
The launch also included a successful in-flight experiment with the C-25 cryogenic stage, which will provide valuable data for future missions. Narayanan noted that the LVM3 rocket has now completed all eight of its launches successfully, establishing it as a reliable vehicle for future missions, including the upcoming Gaganyatri-2 mission.
The deployment of the CMS-03 satellite marks a crucial step in modernizing naval communications and enhancing India’s strategic capabilities in space, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in space technology and its aspirations for global leadership in this field.
