U.S. President Donald Trump said it was "a terrible thing that's happened" to the royals after King Charles III stripped his brother Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, of his titles.
Andrew also lost his Duke of York title and must give up Royal Lodge, his 30-room mansion where he pays a "peppercorn rent." The changes follow mounting revelations about Andrew's friendship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Why It Matters
In August 2019, Epstein died by suicide in a New York jail cell while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Virginia Giuffre, one of his most prominent accusers, said Epstein and his ex-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell flew her to London, New York and the U.S. Virgin Islands by have sex with Andrew when she was 17 years old.
