The walls will soon be open to everyone again after the lift is repaired. The lift has been out of action for several months, meaning the tour of the walls has only been accessible by stairs.

The spiral stairs and lift were installed against the eastern rampart in 2015 by , which manages the castle. planning committee wanted to climb the walls recently to get a better view of a planning application.

However, the broken lift meant not all of them were able to make the climb. The lift gives access to the Medieval Wall Walk, with panoramic views of , Castle Square and the .
