The best-case scenario for the Mets this winter is another reunion with Pete Alonso . His power production and presence in the heart of the Mets’ lineup is irreplaceable.

It’s still possible for the Mets to have a quality offseason if Alonso signs elsewhere, though.

With a flurry of moves — both in free agency and on the trade market — the Mets can soften that blow and put themselves in a position to go on a deep playoff run after their epic collapse in 2025. Mets fans won’t be happy with an Alonso departure, but they’d be praising Steve Cohen and David Stearns if Tarik Skubal is on the mound on Opening Day, flanked on the infield by the likes of Alex Bregman and Cody Bellinger .
