It’s a supreme joy watching Emma Thompson get grimy and gritty in “Down Cemetery Road,” a new British crime series on Apple TV.

Fans of two-time Oscar winner (one for leading actress, the other for screenplay), know her for her generally staid and occasionally matronly role.

Not here.

As Zoe Boehm, Thompson sports a spiky, white haircut and a foul mouth that she uses liberally. She’s abrasive, doesn’t suffer fools and her life is a wreck. That she springs from the keyboard from author Mick Herron should be of little surprise. Herron, the author of the “Slow Horses” books, has a talent for writing broken characters. It makes perfect sense that given the success of “Slow Horses” adaptation that Boehm would find a home on Apple TV.
