VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach mayor Bobby Dyer sent a letter to Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, as well as Congresswoman Jen Kiggans Oct. 31, requesting Virginia leaders to help end the government shutdown.

The government shutdown has been in effect since Oct. 1, which has brought into question payment for federal workers and funding for federal programs such as SNAP and WIC.

Additionally, federal workers who have been furloughed during the shutdown have found it very difficult to navigate the unemployment system and receive their unemployment compensation.

Dyer said the lack of funding for the military and essential workers "demonstrates callous disregard for our nation and cannot be tolerated."
