Hurricane Melissa caused at least 63 deaths and up to $4 billion in insured losses in Jamaica, authorities in the storm-ravaged Caribbean islands said Monday.
At least 28 people were reported killed in Jamaica, 34 in Haiti and one in the Dominican Republic, officials said, as evacuees slowly made their way back to what remained of their homes.
"Seeing the videos and the photographs is one thing, but actually being there in person and seeing the damage is quite another," Jamaican Sen. Abka Fitz-Henley told NBC News about his visit to Saint Elizabeth Parish. "It's heartbreaking."
