The collapse of a medieval tower in central Rome left rescuers scrambling to reach a trapped worker on Monday, reported AP.

The Torre dei Conti collapsed while under renovation, leaving the worker under the rubble for hours.

Another worker, 64, was critically injured and in the hospital while three others were safely rescued after the initial midday collapse, according to firefighter spokesperson Luca Cari.

The rescue was “very complex,” according to law enforcement, as the tower continued to give way while firefighters attempted to free the trapped worker through a first-floor window.

Initially, the rescuers were on a telescopic aerial ladder before they retreated and made another approach on two ladders. That second attempt was also nixed and rescuers sent up a drone instead.
