Nancy Payne of Lansdowne will carry a deeply personal honour this Remembrance Day, serving as Canada’s 2025 National Silver Cross Mother.
On Nov. 11, she will lay a wreath at Ottawa’s National War Memorial, representing all families who have lost a child in military service.

“Nancy’s bravery in sharing her story shines a warm light on her son, who gave his life in the name of this country,” said Berkley Lawrence, Dominion President of the Royal Canadian Legion, in a prepared statement.
Payne’s son, Corporal Randy Joseph Payne, served with the Canadian Army’s 1 Garrison Military Police Company in Wainwright, Alberta.
He began his career in the Royal Canadian Air Force Military Police before being deployed to Afghanistan.
