A driver has been freed after becoming trapped by a fallen tree during a fast-moving storm cell that left a trail of destruction across parts of Sydney overnight.
Emergency services were called to Burwood Road in Croydon Park on Monday evening after a car was crushed by an uprooted tree and fallen powerlines.
"We had live powerlines to deal with, we also had a ruptured gas main," Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said.
"The occupant was trapped in the vehicle for quite some time, just over an hour."
The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) said it received more than 400 calls for help overnight, mostly related to wind damage, fallen trees and debris.
SES spokesperson Samuel Corby said both Liverpool in Sydney's south-west and the Sutherland Shire bore the brunt of destruct
