BOSTON —

A two-time survivor of breast cancer at age 42, Stefanie Tam said hot flashes are a part of her recovery process.

"Both times I have been on medications that essentially put me on forced menopause," she said. "I get a lot of hot flashes naturally from that. Once it does come on, it almost -- there's no stopping it, and it comes very quickly."

Tam searched for advice online about getting relief.

"A lot of cancer patients will just run to the freezer, run to the sink and start running cold water," she said. "But it was just not realistic for me to carry a refrigerator with me."
