VERONA, Wis. — While waiting for the federal government to shore up SNAP, 700,000 Wisconsinites are also waiting for their food assistance this month. That’s why state and local leaders are asking residents to donate what they can.

Dane County Executive Melissa Agard announced an emergency food drive, encouraging residents to donate directly to the volunteer-run Badger Prairie Needs Network, any Dane County government building, or a local food bank.

The effort aims to support the roughly 64,000 people in Dane County who rely on FoodShare, Wisconsin’s version of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

“This is what it is that we can do to help for our community,” Agard said. “I do hope that other levers become available to us, but right now, it is important for us all to remember
