MADISON (WKOW) -- Attorney General Josh Kaul (D-WI) and 21 other attorneys general filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education to block a new rule that restricts eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

“The PSLF program has helped folks build careers serving their communities,” Kaul said. “This rule, which would undercut and enable the Secretary of Education to weaponize the program, should be struck down.”

The PSLF program forgives federal student loans for public service employees after 10 years of qualifying work. The new rule, finalized on October 31, allows the federal government to declare employers ineligible for PSLF. This rule is set to take effect in July 2026 unless a court intervenes.
