Within the walls of an outback high school, Broken Hill student and aspiring police detective Kye Turley has had a taste of his dream career.

Kye is one of dozens of students who recently took part in an interactive workshop called Crime Story, which places young people in charge of mock criminal investigations set up in their classroom.

Sifting through discarded cigarettes, overturned furniture and seemingly random scraps of paper, the 16-year-old said the experience was like stepping onto the set of the crime thrillers he loved growing up.

"I think [detective work] is a really interesting career," Kye said.

"The forensic science part has been blowing my mind, like the fingerprint scanning [and] all the blood tests … there's a lot to get through."
