Election Day is on Tuesday, Nov. 4, and millions of Americans will head to the polls. While not the midterms or a presidential year, several state and local races are gaining national attention.
Two new governors will be elected—one in Virginia and one in New Jersey—as well as several high-profile mayoral races across the U.S., including NYC, Boston and Minneapolis.
And in California, there's a special election on a redistricting referendum, Prop 50, which, if approved, will redraw the state's congressional district lines.
Here's what you need to know about what's open and closed as Americans head to the voting booth.
Are schools closed on Election Day?
It depends.
The easiest way to verify whether your student's school will be open on Election Day is to check the dates (or holidays) listed on the district calendar.
But some schools, specifically those in the New York City public school system, will be closed on Election Day, while schools in California and Boston generally remain open.
In twelve school districts across the Commonwealth of Virginia, including Richmond and Virginia Beach, Tuesday, Nov. 4 is considered a "student holiday," meaning no school for students.
And while New Jersey's gubernatorial race is one of the main elections to watch, there's no easy answer if schools in the Garden State are in session or not.
Schools in the North Bergen School District, for example, will have the day off, while schools in the Jersey City School District will not.
Which states have voting leave laws?
There is currently no federal law requiring organizations to give their employees time off to vote during working hours, according to CNN.
However, 28 states and the District of Columbia do have such laws. North Dakota recommends, but does not require, employers to provide time off.
The states requiring voting leave: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
