WAYLAND, Mich. — Alcohol may have played a role in a wrong-way crash that killed three near Wayland.

Of the fatalities, Lieutenant Brandon Berens with the Allegan County Sheriff's Office said the wrong-way driver was a 38-year-old woman from Grand Rapids, who may have been under the influence of alcohol, and in the other car, a 16 and an 18-year-old were also killed.

It happened in the early morning hours on Sunday. Lt. Berens said the 38-year-old woman was driving in the correct lanes of southbound US-131. She got off on the 129th Avenue exit near the Gun Lake Casino, then drove the wrong way down the US-131 northbound exit ramp, where she later crashed.

According to Lt. Berens, while there have been wrong way drivers near this area before, this is one of the worst they've seen.
