Treasurer Eric Abetz says he is willing to intervene in a public sector wage dispute if necessary, adding that the wage demands being made by unions would cost the state's budget more than the value of the Macquarie Point stadium.

The state's public sector unions have combined forces to pressure the government to do better than its offer of a 3 per cent pay rise over the next 12 months through a range of industrial actions, including stop-work meetings, which last week caused schools to open late across the state .

Mr Abetz told Parliament on Tuesday that the log of claims presented to government wage negotiations was "clearly unaffordable" for the state.
