Normally on a third-and-2 near midfield, Montana State would strongly consider running the ball to move the chains. But with wide receiver Ryan King matched up one-on-one on the outside, there was a big play opportunity.
King, lined up to the left of quarterback Justin Lamson, ran past Northern Colorado cornerback Derrick Jones on a deep post route. Lamson’s ball was under-thrown — King likely would’ve scored if it was thrown sooner — but the WR found an opening between Jones and safety Franky Morales inside UNC’s 5-yard line for a 45-yard catch.
“I knew I'm the first read on that (play), the only read,” King said Monday. “So I knew I had to win.”
