A five-year-old boy is dead after he was hit by an SUV in a residential parking lot in the northeast Edmonton community of McConachie on Monday.

Police said at around 10 a.m., a 25-year-old woman was in the SUV and pulling out of a residential complex's parking lot. At the same time, a boy was running east on the sidewalk. He tripped and fell and was hit by the vehicle.

Police said the driver immediately called 911. The boy was taken to hospital but was later declared dead.

The Edmonton Police Service's major collisions investigation section is investigating. Police said they do not believe speed or alcohol was a factor in the collision.
