VERMONT (ABC22/FOX44) - Three American navy ships have been named after the state of Vermont. The first was after the War of 1812, when the U.S. Navy defended the country against British invasion in the Battle of Plattsburgh.
But there wasn't a ship named Vermont for almost a century from 1920 to 2020 - when the current nuclear submarine was commissioned. It even has a nickname reflecting a characteristic state business - "Big Sugar."
And last week, that submarine - the current USS Vermont - arrived in Stirling, Australia for extensive maintenance, which the USS Vermont Support Group, a nonprofit organization, called an important step in the alliance between the U.S., Australia, and the United Kingdom.
