Melbourne Cup contender Onesmoothoperator has copped a 1kg weight penalty after dominating in the lead-up to Australia’s great race at Flemington next Tuesday.

The seven-year-old gelding firmed into $11 on the back of victory in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m) last Friday.

But that win has come at a cost after Racing Victoria’s head of handicapping David Hegan saw fit to lift his weight to 53kg.

“Onesmoothoperator was simply too good for his rivals on Friday night,” Hegan said.

“Despite carrying the equal topweight of 57kg, he blitzed his rivals late to win eased down in stunning fashion.

“The dynamic nature of his performance rated above his Geelong Cup win last year, when he was penalised 1kg, and so he warrants a further re-handicap.” Loading Tweet
