The Election Commission is conducting the second phase of Special Intensive Revision (SIR), the voters' list clean-up exercise, in nine states and three Union Territories (UTs) from today. The move comes two days ahead of the first phase of the Assembly polls in Bihar, where the electoral exercise was held, and more than 68 lakh names were deleted from the electoral rolls after verification.
The sweeping exercise will cover nearly 51 crore voters in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. Of these, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Puducherry are scheduled to hold Assembly elections in 2026.
