WISCONSIN (WQOW) - Many municipalities across Wisconsin are turning to wheel taxes to help fund transportation projects, but a new bill could change how those decisions are made.
A Republican-authored bill proposes that wheel taxes may only be passed through referenda in scheduled elections.
In a committee hearing on October 29, one of the bill's authors Senator Rob Hutton (R-Brookfield) shared how widespread wheel taxes have become.
"According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation 53 municipalities and 14 counties currently impose a local vehicle registration fee, also known as a wheel tax. Adoption of this tax is growing rapidly, in 2011 only 4 communities imposed a wheel tax," Sen. Hutton said.
He then defended the bill, stating it makes the process more open and accounta
