SHREVEPORT, La. — As grocery prices soar and SNAP benefits shrink, Monday evening, Caddo Parish leaders voted Monday to advance $200,000 in emergency funding for the Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana. The decision is expected to keep thousands of Caddo Parish families from going hungry before Thanksgiving.
Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana representatives Tina Jones and Susan Garcia told commissioners - during a work session - that more residents are showing up hungry, including families of local and federal employees halted paychecks.
“We’re requesting $100,000 in emergency funding to help residents of Caddo Parish facing food insecurity,” Garcia read from prepared remarks. “ With reductions to Louisiana’s SNAP program and people not getting government checks, demand is spiking
