PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Holly Campbell from New York and Kim Scadlock, who once lived in Oregon, share a bond born from heartbreak.
Scadlock's son, Beckham, was born with a severe heart defect. Doctors said his only chance of survival was a transplant.
"Usually, the waiting they said, is usually around six months, and the chances of him getting a heart were about 30%. And we knew he had weeks at the most," Scadlock said.
After 10 agonizing days on the list while on life support, Jake's heart gave Beckham new life.
Jake, Campbell's son, was two-and-a-half months old when he stopped breathing in his bassinet. After CPR and medical evaluation, he was declared legally brain dead.
However, Jake's legacy, and heart, live on through Beckam, who is now 18 years old.
