PEORIA ( 25News Now ) -Rather than wait on the federal government, City of Bloomington Township trustees voted Monday night to use local funds to help feed the hungry right now.
The vote was unanimous among the Bloomington City Council, functioning as the Township trustees, to use $150,000 from existing general funds to assist potentially hundreds of eligible families get Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP benefits.
Township Supervisor Deb Skillrud even indicated benefits could be available as soon as Tuesday.
The township program would provide between $200 to $500 per month based on a household’s size and current income.
