As the federal government shutdown continues, many Alaskans are facing uncertainty about their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

Governor Mike Dunleavy is taking steps to ensure families don’t go hungry. On Monday, he issued a 30-day state disaster declaration aimed at helping those who rely on SNAP to buy food.

Under the plan, the state will coordinate with the company that loads Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards so that benefits can be distributed weekly instead of monthly. The Alaska Department of Health will also work with local food banks to make sure supplies reach those in need.
