(NewsNation) — Democrat Corey O'Connor faces Republican Tony Moreno in Tuesday's Pittsburgh mayoral race, with O'Connor heavily favored to win in a city that has not elected a Republican mayor for decades.
O'Connor, the current Allegheny County controller and former city councilman, defeated incumbent Ed Gainey in the May 20 Democratic primary. Moreno, a city police officer for 24 years, is campaigning for mayor again after running against Ed Gainey in 2021.
The campaign focused heavily on city finances, public safety and affordable housing. Both candidates criticized Gainey's tenure and acknowledged the city faced financial problems.
