A Victorian Labor MP has been accused of "gaslighting" Melburnians after dismissing the city's crime epidemic.

On the same weekend that a Melbourne family was terrorised by an attempted armed burglary and a teen was stabbed in his own electorate, Labor MP for Mordialloc Tim Richardson took to X to tout Melbourne as the "best city in the world".

After being flooded with comments criticising his claims - with notable Victorians declaring the city had become a "rat's nest" - Mr Richardson hit back at detractors for talking down "our amazing city".

His dismissal of concerns around crime, graffiti and higher taxes sparked 3AW host Jacqui Felgate to accuse him of "gaslighting" all Melburnians.
