New Delhi: The wealth of India’s richest one percent has increased by 62 percent between 2000 and 2023. This information was revealed in the report released under the G-20 Chairmanship of South Africa.
The study led by Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz cautioned that global inequality has reached crisis levels, which threatens democracy, economic stability and climate progress. The G20 Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality found that the top one percent — the richest — globally — acquired 41 percent of all new wealth created between 2000 and 2024, whereas half of the lower population received just one percent. This committee includes economists Jayati Ghosh, Vini Bayanima and Imran Valodia.
