According to several pundits, it appeared that a deal of sorts was imminent, yet apparently Donald Trump didn’t like its effectiveness. As he is known to have done in other negotiations, he withdrew at the last minute. The Ronald Reagan video Doug Ford used in the the Ontario ad campaign was simply a convenient excuse for Trump’s childish suspension of talks. Article content Article content

That said, notwithstanding Reagan’s one-off imposition of tariffs on Japan at the time (and for valid reason), excerpts from Reagan’s speech accurately reflected his views on free trade. Undoubtedly they hit a nerve with Trump and the MAGA crowd.
