BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - The worst flooding in Vermont history occurred on this day in 1927.

The rain began a couple of days earlier.

Over nine inches fell across the state, sending rivers over their banks in the early morning hours of November 4.

At least 84 people died in the floodwaters, including Lt. Governor Samuel Hollister Jackson.

The damage was extensive. Nearly 1,300 bridges were destroyed, thousands of sections of road were washed away, and nearly 2,000 homes and barns were damaged.

It took about three years to rebuild the damaged infrastructure.

The state also built three major flood control dams to help prevent a repeat of the disaster.
