President Donald Trump has not ruled out U.S. troops on the ground in Nigeria after ordering the military to "prepare for possible action" in the West African country, but there's little clarity on what this means or whether the Republican will follow through with his threat.
Trump on Friday had claimed "radical Islamists" were responsible for a "mass slaughter" of Christians in Nigeria and announced his administration was placing Abuja back on a list of countries labeled as "of particular concern."
This is an official designation by the president under a 1998 law known as the International Religious Freedom Act. Republican Senator Ted Cruz had introduced a bill to designate Nigeria a country "of particular concern" in September.
