A new online petition is urging the UK Government to replace the BBC TV licence fee with either advertising or a paywall ahead of the annual price rise in April. The fee currently costs £174.50 and must be paid by households who watch or record any live TV, or risk facing a potential fine. ‌

However, this payment typically rises in-line with the September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate, which was 3.8 per cent. Such an uprating would see the licence fee increase by £6.65 to £181.15 for the 2026/27 financial year. ‌

It’s important to be aware this isn’t set in stone and will be confirmed by the UK Government later this month, usually around the time of the Autumn Budget which is on November 26. ‌
