An American father and his teenage son lost their lives after being attacked by a swarm of Asian giant hornets while vacationing in Laos, according to a report by The Times .

The species, known as the world’s largest hornet, delivers venom capable of causing excruciating pain, severe allergic reactions, and, in rare instances, death.

The tragic incident occurred on October 15 near Luang Prabang along the Mekong River, where Daniel Owen, 47, a school headmaster based in Vietnam, and his 15-year-old son, Cooper, were zip-lining at an eco-adventure resort.

Originally from Idaho, USA, Owen had lived overseas for nearly two decades and was residing in Vietnam with his wife, Jessica, and their son at the time of the accident.
