Kolkata : The controversy over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in West Bengal has erupted into a full-blown political storm, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accusing the BJP and the Election Commission (EC) of turning the exercise into a tool for “silent, invisible rigging” ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.

TMC alleges 8 suicides because of SIR

The TMC has alleged that eight people across West Bengal have died by suicide out of fear of the ongoing SIR. Among them are Jahir Mal, a 30-year-old from Howrah’s Uluberia, who was distressed over a spelling error in his ID, and Mohan Sheikh from Murshidabad’s Kandi, who consumed pesticide fearing his name was missing from the voter list.
