Five-star freshman quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis has been handed the reins to the Colorado offense.

On Tuesday, CU head coach Deion Sanders confirmed that Lewis will make his first career start when the Buffs play at West Virginia on Saturday (10 a.m. MT, TNT).

Asked the reason for the change, Sanders said, “Common sense.”

Fifth-year senior Kaidon Salter has started eight of the first nine games for the Buffs (3-6, 1-5 Big 12), but has struggled in the last two weeks.

Lewis came off the bench during Saturday’s 52-17 loss to Arizona and threw his first career touchdown. Lewis also left the game early with an apparent hand injury, but Sanders said Lewis is ready to go.

“He’s good,” Sanders said. “He’s throwing the heck out of the ball.”
