BOURNE, Mass. —
Storms brought powerful winds blowing across the South Coast of Massachusetts and Cape Cod overnight, knocking down trees and tearing the roof off at least one building.
According to the National Weather Service, some of the damage in South Coast communities may be attributable to a phenomenon known as a " gustnado ," or a whirlwind formed as an eddy in thunderstorm outflows. NWS meteorologists said the gustnado was likely but noted the reported damage from local emergency managers did not warrant dispatching a survey team to make a definitive review to define the incident.
Much of Massachusetts remains under a wind advisory through 7 p.m.
At a boatyard in Mattapoisett, the roof was blown off the structure. Debris was launched over nearby boats, landing in the trees.
