Dick Cheney , who served as U.S. vice president to President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, died Monday, Nov. 3. He was 84.
Cheney died of complications of pneumonia as well as cardiac and vascular disease, his family said in a statement . The former vice president’s political career spanned decades, including roles in the administrations of U.S. presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush and as a U.S. representative for Wyoming from 1979 to 1989.
After news of Cheney's death on Tuesday morning, tributes and condolences began rolling out from his former colleagues. Former President George W. Bush called Cheney's death a "loss to the nation and a sorrow to his friends."
